PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today stressed that there was no firm decision by the cabinet on a price hike for petrol and diesel yet.
He dismissed foreign media reports regarding fuel subsidy cuts as premature and unethical, adding that though there had been discussions, but no conclusive action had been taken.
“If such a move is taken, the government would need to explain the method so as not to burden the people.
“There has been a series of negative reporting, particularly from some neighbouring countries and international media, recently. First, it was the casino issue and now, the price hike for petrol and diesel,” he said.
Speaking to reporters after meeting with community leaders at The Light Hotel in Butterworth, Anwar criticised the foreign media reports for quoting information from unreliable sources.
“While we accept the principle of freedom of the media, it must be based on facts. The information must be from a reliable source.
“Any official announcements regarding policy changes from the government would be made publicly and transparently.
“We will announce it by giving notice. There is no secret,” he said.
When the international media played up the issue, Anwar said it benefited the opposition who exploited the matter.
On Friday, foreign media reports said that Malaysia is set to cut fuel subsidies by June, a major economic reform that will be a key test of support for the Pakatan Harapan-led unity government as the public grapples with high living costs.
The media report, quoting official and industry sources, said that diesel prices will float to market rates in a matter of weeks after the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election on May 11, and it will be followed by a staggered rise in retail rates of petrol. – May 5, 2024.
