The medical condition of Senate president Datuk Mutang Tagal is “serious”, according to Datuk Gerawat Gala.

The deputy minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department said Mutang’s condition had not changed since he was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN).

“He’s still in the condition when they brought him in (back to Malaysia),” Gerawat told reporters at the Sarawak assembly lobby today.

Mutang, the former Bukit Mas MP who was only sworn in as the Senate president in February, reportedly arrived home in Malaysia at 1am on Monday.

Mutang fell ill in Azerbaijan where he was on an official visit and had to be admitted into a hospital there.

“He had to cut short his visit to be flown home. I’m surprised.

“I didn’t know he had a heart problem. We used to play golf together.”

“Let’s continue to support him in prayers,” Gerawat, whose portfolio is to oversee labour matters, immigration and project monitoring, told Sarawakians.

Mutang is the first Dayak to hold the office of Senate president. He was an MP from 1982 to 1990.

His office last night confirmed he is being treated at the National Heart Institute.

“He has been receiving treatment since arriving home in Malaysia after a working trip to Azerbaijan on Monday (May 6),” the statement said.

It also urged everyone not to speculate nor spread unverified information about Mutang’s health. – May 8, 2024.
