THE two navy helicopters that crashed after a mid-air collision during a training exercise in Lumut last month were airworthy, a preliminary report shows.
The report said the crew were also fit to fly.
The April 23 crash had killed all 10 people on board the two helicopters.
The navy said the helicopters were maintained according to the recommendations of the manufacturer.
"The AW139 HOM helicopter had a black box while the Fennec was not equipped with one. Data analysis from the multi-purpose flight data recorder was received on May 3 and is being further analysed by the investigation board," the navy said.
It said all the crew members were in fine health and qualifed to fly.
"The investigation board consists of nine TLDM officers with expertise in air engineering and flight. It is assisted by the Royal Malaysian Air Force's Directorate-General Technical Airworthiness (DGTA) and military medical officers.”
The final report is expected to be completed May 29.
Two navy helicopters, an AgustaWestland AW-139 and a Eurocopter AS555SN Fennec, collided while training last month for the 90th Naval Day celebration.
The AW139, with seven crew members, crashed on the stairs of the TLDM stadium while the Fennec with three on board crashed into the swimming pool in the sports complex. – May 9, 2024.
