S P Punithan insists that the Indian community's interests and the party's principles must be respected - October 29, 2026

THE Malaysian Indian People's Party (MIPP) will not contest the Melaka state election under Perikatan Nasional (PN) after negotiations with the coalition's leadership failed, its president S P Punithan said.

Punithan said the party would not compromise its principles and political dignity simply to secure seats in the Nov 14 election.

“We will not sacrifice our principles merely for political interests. MIPP is not a party that will compromise simply to become a candidate,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

He said the breakdown in negotiations highlighted the importance of mutual respect, inclusiveness and recognition of every component party's interests within a political coalition.

A coalition's strength, he said, should be built on unity and trust rather than dependence on any single party.

Punithan said MIPP's priority was to defend the interests of the Indian community and ensure its voice received due recognition in the country's political landscape.

“When negotiations fail to reach an agreement, MIPP must make a decision based on its principles, dignity and political mandate,” he said.

“Seats can be sought, but the dignity of our struggle cannot be sacrificed.” - October 29, 2026
