THE federal government will develop two entry points on the border between East Malaysia and the Indonesian new capital of Nusantara.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the two entry points are in Tebedu in southern Sarawak and Kalabakan in eastern Sabah.
"Tebedu and Kalabakan Immigration and Customs facilities and supporting facilities have been earmarked for development," he said.
"We expect to see a surge in transboundary movement of people and economic and industrial linkages as the Indonesian new capital of Nusantara in Kalimantan is seeing rapid progress now.
"We will be liaising closely with Sarawak and Sabah on these border plans," he said after visiting the Bekenu Immigration Depot.
The army will also build more border security outposts along the East Malaysian border with Kalimantan. The RM35 billion project to build 19 more border checkpoints is scheduled for completion by 2045. The first phase is to be finished this year.
Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari had said there would be 14 new checkpoints in Sarawak and five in Sabah.
Under the 12th Malaysia Plan, the federal government challenned RM70 million to Sarawak beef up security along its 1,000km border with Kalimantan, he said. – May 31, 2024.
