THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has revived comprehensive waste segregation at source in public places.
It will be reintroduced next month throughout the island, and it will also occasionally deploy its enforcement unit to drive a point across about its importance.
The state generates over 2,200 tonnes of waste daily of which 80% is channelled to the Pulau Burung sanitary landfill, which is expected to reach full capacity by 2028.
Ratepayers must now be conscious about separating waste such as plastic, linen and cans in separate containers or when they discard their rubbish.
Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the council will go on a drive to raise awareness of waste separation.
“It is an important milestone initiated by our MBPP councillors to disseminate information. This policy is set to enhance the state and the local authority’s efforts to educate the community.
"We look forward to the implementation of the initiative next month,” he said when launching the programme in front of City Hall recently.
The initiative was originally launched in 2017 and it was mainly promoted in residential areas but was stopped due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Rajendran emphasised the importance of waste segregation and recycling efforts in fighting the rise of pollution amid climate change.
Waste segregation tanks will be placed in public places as part of the programme. – June 9, 2024.
