THE Dewan Rakyat today observed a moment's silence in remembrance of Dewan Negara president Datuk Mutang Tagal and senator Tan Sri Joseph Kurup.

Mutang died last month. Joseph, the founding president of Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS), died in April.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul conveyed his condolences to the families.

"On behalf of the members of the house and the parliament (staff), I would like to extend my condolences to the families of Mutang and Joseph.

"I hope both families remain strong in facing the situation," he said.

Mutang, 69, was Malaysia's first Sarawak indigenous Dewan Negara president. He died after falling ill during a working visit to Azerbaijan. He leaves behind his wife, Datin Ho Mei Leng, and three children.

Kurup, 80, a career politician, died in April. His wife was Puan Sri Melinda Mak Soak Fong. Joseph retired from politics and stepped down as PBRS president in January last year. His son, Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, who was deputy president, took over the presidency.

PBRS was founded by Joseph, a former cabinet member, in 1994, following a split from Parti Bersatu Sabah. – June 24, 2024
