PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he is happy with Bangladesh’s newly appointed interim leader Muhammad Yunus’ assurance that the rights of all Bangladeshis will be protected by the new government.
In a Facebook post today, Anwar said he had called Yunus yesterday to congratulate him on his recent appointment and the interim leader had given him assurance on protecting minorities.
“I am very pleased that Yunus has given his assurances to protect the rights of all Bangladeshis, including minorities,” he said in the post.
He said he had told Yunus that Malaysia was ready to help and support the interim government in rebuilding and restoring peace and security in Bangladesh.
Anwar said Yunus had invited him to visit Bangladesh to further strengthen the brotherly relationship between the two countries.
Last Thursday, the Nobel Peace Prize winner was sworn into office after a deadly student-led uprising ended the 15-year rule of now former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Following the violence which led to the collapse of her government, Sheikh Hasina sought refuge in India.
Yunus’ assurance to Anwar on minorities came following attacks on businesses and homes owned by Hindus in the aftermath of the government’s collapse.
Anwar’s failure to publicly condemn the violence against the minorities had led to criticism from former DAP leader P Ramasamy and former Klang MP Charles Santiago, who said the prime minister should be doing more while drawing parallels with his vociferous support for Palestinians. – August 14, 2024.
