THE Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department has frozen the annual leave for all of its fire and rescue personnel.

State Acting Director Tiong Hing Lii today announced the immediate freeze.

"Leave for all our personnel has been frozen and those who are on leave have been recalled.

"All the 39 Bomba stations throughout Sarawak are on full alert for the monsoon and the floods," he told a press conference in Kuching.

Sarawak has 1,284 full-time fire and rescue personnel and some 1,480 auxiliary personnel.

All of them have been placed on standby for immediate deployment to assist in flood rescue and evacuations, said Tiong.

Last week saw the districts of Miri, Kapit and Sarikei flooded following heavy rains, a sign that the landas (monsoon) season is arriving in Sarawak. - December 2, 2024
