Iconic Pesta Pulau Pinang to be relocated

THE iconic Pesta Pulau Pinang - the longest annual outdoor funfair festival in the country at Sungai Nibong is likely to be relocated as the site is needed for the proposed 28 km Mutiara light rail transit (LRT) line project.

With earthworks expected to commence on Saturday at the site, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate the formal groundbreaking ceremony.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow disclosed this while speaking at the opening of the Pesta's 60th edition, which was graced by the Yang di - Pertua Negri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak last night.

Sungai Nibong is the mid - connecting point between Komtar in George Town and the end of the LRT line at the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas.

It is also home to the main express bus depot on the island.

“The 2025 edition will likely mark the last celebration at this historic venue, as part of the site is being incorporated into the Mutiara LRT Line project. 

“While this signifies progress towards a more developed and efficient Penang, the spirit and purpose of the Pesta Pulau Pinang will remain unchanged. 

“Even though the location will change, the essence of the festival as a celebration for Penangites will never fade,” he said.

Chow emphasised that the Pesta is not just about its location, but also embodies the spirit of Penang’s society – one that values family, culture, unity, and innovation.

Since its inception in 1966, the Pesta Pulau Pinang has evolved into an annual tourism highlight, becoming a source of pride for the state. 

It has grown to attract not only locals but also a diverse range of domestic and international visitors.

In addition, Chow shared that the state government has allocated RM4.5 million for the operation of this year's Pesta Pulau Pinang edition. 

This allocation covers the costs of operations, infrastructure maintenance, repairs, and various improvements to enhance the festival experience.

The ongoing festival will open until Feb 2, with a turnout of 500,000 visitors expected. - January 8, 2025.
