SELANGOR police have identified a man in his 30s with a history of drug and criminal offenses as the suspect in a shooting incident that occurred at a Setia Alam shopping centre last night.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said confirmed the suspect's identity and stated that a manhunt is underway.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:50 PM, prompting seven police reports from eyewitnesses. Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim, a cleaner at the shopping centre, was storing cleaning equipment on the P1 level when the suspect suddenly opened fire, striking him four times in the legs and buttocks.

Despite his injuries, the cleaner managed to escape into the mall and seek assistance.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled to the P2 level where he then carjacked a Perodua Ativa, forcing the driver at gunpoint to drive him out of the Shah Alam area. The suspect later instructed the driver to stop on the highway and fled the vehicle, disappearing along the roadside.

Police are investigating the incident under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, which carries a potential death penalty, and Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, which carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident or the suspect's whereabouts to contact Senior Criminal Investigation Officer ASP Mohd Afandi Ahmad at 016-725 2948.

Bernama reported the police chief confirmed that the cleaner is receiving medical treatment for his injuries.

The incident sparked widespread concern and quickly circulated on social media. – February 9, 2025
