A 26-YEAR-OLD man who set his wife’s car on fire following a domestic dispute last week claimed trial to committing mischief by fire at the Johor Bahru Sessions Court today.

Chai Kaw Fung, who works at a car accessories shop, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before judge Thalha Bachok @ Embok Mok.

Chai was charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing the offence on a Toyota Vios belonging to his wife, See Li Jing, 21, at Jalan Tebrau, Johor Bahru, at about 10.20pm on Feb 2.

If convicted, he could be imprisoned for up to 14 years and fined.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Fatimah Mamu prosecuted while Chai was represented by Goh Sze Han.

The court fixed bail at RM8,000 and ordered Chai to surrender his passport to the court.

The judge fixed March 11 for the submission of documents.

It was earlier reported that See and three passengers managed to escape before flames engulfed the car.

The vehicle believed to have been used by the suspect to trap the victims was also seized.

Police said the suspect tested negative for drugs. The fiery attack was captured on a motorist's dashcam and quickly went viral on social media. - February 10, 2025
