A MALAYSIAN tourist, Farah Putri Mulyani, who was vacationing in Sri Lanka, became an unlikely hero when she saved a local man from drowning at the Diyaluma Waterfall.

The incident unfolded recently as the man, who had been swimming in the waterfall, accidentally ventured into the deep end.

His friends, visibly distressed, were seen shouting for help as the man struggled to stay afloat in the water. Fortunately, Farah, who was nearby, immediately sprang into action.

In a video, she is seen diving into the water and swimming toward the struggling man. With great effort, she successfully brought him to the shore, where his friends then assisted him away from the water.

In a post on social media reflecting on the dramatic event, Farah shared her thoughts and urged others to be more cautious around natural water features such as waterfalls.

She highlighted the dangers posed by hidden hazards, especially in areas where the water depth can change abruptly and there is no current to aid swimmers.

“This incident completely shifted the focus of my trip,” Farah wrote. “It made me realise that more people need to be aware of the potential dangers at waterfalls. The pools can be incredibly deep, and without a current to help you swim, it becomes even more dangerous, especially if you're not a strong swimmer.

“Since this happened, I’ve been in deep reflection,” she added.

Farah’s quick response and bravery have earned her praise on social media, with many expressing gratitude for her actions in saving the man’s life.

The incident also serves as an important reminder for tourists and locals alike to exercise caution when exploring nature’s beautiful but often treacherous landscapes.

Farah, a freelance linguist, voice-over talent and now, businesswoman, who dances to her own tune, a symphony composed of familial bonds, entrepreneurial zeal and an unwavering commitment to a healthy lifestyle, was astonished over her ability to save a life, and that of a total stranger in a foreign land.

In a recent Linked post, some Malaysians took it upon themselves to say: “She didn’t even think twice to jump and save him. A true heroine!” – February 15, 2025
