KOTA KINABALU – The Sabah government is seeking a closer working relationship, as well as a boost in economic ties, with China as the superpower nation revamps its agriculture industry.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said Sabah itself is in dire need of a lift economically after a disastrous year marred by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We have so much to catch up on, but we are lucky to have the support of a generous China in guiding and helping us achieve our ambition.
“Sabah is an agricultural state and we are looking to elevate this industry in Sabah to a higher level through the use of 5G technology."
China is a leading country in the technological front, making one breakthrough after another, surpassing other countries in the world, he said.
“Therefore, as the deputy chief minister, I hope that China will assist Sabah in achieving its ambition and, eventually, raising our standard of living to a level we have always wanted it to be,” he said in his speech at China’s consulate-general’s office here yesterday.
Jeffrey, who is also state agriculture and fisheries minister, was speaking at a ceremony to hand over donations to the Tambunan Bondulu Orphanage by consul-general Liang Caide.
He said the Sabah government is grateful for the continued support from the Chinese government through its consulate here, and called for greater cooperation in the future.
This includes sharing their knowledge and experience on how to handle the Covid-19 pandemic more effectively and efficiently.
Meanwhile, in his speech, Liang said the well-being of the people of Sabah has always been a concern of the consulate-general.
“The consulate-general is willing to, within its capacity, provide assistance and support the people of Sabah in overcoming difficulties and regaining hope, especially in this time.
“Today, the consulate-general donated necessities to the Bondulu orphanage in Tambunan.
“Although the quantity is limited, it is a little token of love from us, and we hope to give them warmth and care through these materials,” he said.
He said Sabah is an important node of the 21st century Maritime Silk Road, and the state has advantages and potential in terms of boosting cooperation with China.
He hoped to strengthen communication and coordination in various fields, as well as open a new chapter in the China-Sabah alliance post-Covid-19. – The Vibes, December 20, 2020
