PROMINENT economist Tan Sri Kamal Salih died today from heart complications.

He was 78.

Kamal was a former member of parliament and was most regarded as a sought-after economist and academician.

He was the Universiti Sains Malaysia deputy vice - chancellor and a founding member of the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER), whose findings are now widely adopted in both the public and private sectors.

Kamal spoke his mind, saying in recent interviews that the new economic policy needs to be disbanded as it has overstayed on its intentions and merits.

He also urged last year for the Finance Ministry to revive the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to allow better revenue collection streams.

Kamal is also aaid to have supported some of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's fiscal policies on stimulating the economy.

He also played a role in helping the country mitigate the recession of 1997 / 1998 Asian currency crises.

It is understood that Kamal will be laid to rest at the Muslim cemetery at Masjid Raudhatul Jannah in Kampung Sungai Buah, Dengkil, Sepang. - March 6, 2025.
