MALAYSIA must nurture its own champions in artificial intelligence (AI) within the semiconductor industry and develop a solid local ecosystem for AI.
As highlighted by Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, applying AI technology will not only enhance the productivity of semiconductor companies while doing business, but also elevate the standing of Malaysia as a global player in the industry.
"We have to go beyond using AI technologies and work towards AI creation to become a global AI driven semiconductor hub.
“It is high time for Malaysia's semiconductor industry players to be at the forefront of AI powered innovation," he said after the launching of the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association AI Nexus (MAIN).
Gobind noted the need for all semiconductor firms to collaborate with AI designers, research bodies, and even decision makers, as this is a cross-cutting area that will be successful only through teamwork.
The government has pledged to assist industries within the context of digitisation.
For example, last December, the government set up the National AI Office (NAIO) to spearhead the nation’s AI programme as well as to offer needed assistance, infrastructure, and direction to enable the semiconductor sector to implement AI in their operations optimally.
Gobind stated that the establishment of MAIN marks another landmark event for Malaysia in its journey with the semiconductor industry and AI as it provides an AI ecosystem integration platform for the industry. – March 8, 2025
