MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M Saravanan has decided not to debate controversial preacher Zamri Vinoth.
He told a press conference that he made the decision to call off the debate following advice from national unity minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang and MIC president Datuk Seri SA Vigneswaran.
The Tapah MP emphasised that the decision was made for the sake of national harmony.
Aaron had earlier urged all individuals to avoid religious discussions, including the expected exchange between Saravanan and Zamri.
He cautioned that such dialogues could incite tension and harm interfaith relationships in the nation.
"Conversations regarding religion should discontinue if they merely serve to highlight differences and disregard unity efforts.
“Religious discourse must respect the diversity of our society," he said.
Aaron emphasised that while individuals may possess varying beliefs, it is essential to concentrate on shared values that can unite Malaysians.
"I have discussed it and decided that this debate will not proceed for the sake of national harmony," added Saravanan. - March 11, 2025
