A 47-year-old local man is under investigation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for allegedly uploading false content with sensitive religious overtones on social media.

The content in question, which was posted on his Facebook account on March 9, 2025, claimed that the call to prayer (azan) through loudspeakers at Ayer Kuning Mosque was no longer permitted, MCMC cited in a statement today.

MCMC’s enforcement team initiated an investigation and conducted a recorded statement session at the Taiping District Police Station on March 12, 2025.

During the investigation, a mobile phone and SIM card were confiscated for forensic analysis.

Earlier, MCMC served a notice under Section 255 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) to the individual, requiring him to attend the interview session for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 233(1)(a) of the same Act, and if found guilty, the individual could face a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment for a maximum of two years, or both.

MCMC has reminded the public to use social media platforms responsibly and ethically, warning against posting content with elements of race, religion, and royalty (3R) that may threaten the harmony of different communities and religions in the country. – March 13, 2025
