DEMOCRATIC Action Party (DAP) Secretary-General Anthony Loke vowed to implement “significant changes” to the party’s central executive committee if he is re-elected during the upcoming party elections tomorrow.
Speaking at a press conference today, Loke highlighted that these changes would reflect the evolving role of DAP within the government and focus on strengthening the party’s organisation and structure.
However, he was quick to emphasise that the changes would not target any individual or specific position within the party, a leading daily cited him saying.
"I hope to bring continuous reforms to the party, including structural and institutional changes, during my tenure as Secretary-General," Loke remarked, adding, it was essential for the party to continually push for changes in order to meet the evolving aspirations of the people.
“A leadership reshuffle and rejuvenation are necessary, but it doesn’t mean sidelining anyone. Instead, it’s about assigning leaders to different roles at the right time,” he explained.
Loke said the party elections should not be focused solely on one individual but should instead centre on the collective future and direction of the party. "I believe it is unfair to reduce party elections to just one individual when they are about the party’s future and direction."
As part of his vision for DAP’s future, Loke revealed that structural adjustments would be introduced, with some proposals requiring amendments to the party’s constitution.
"Once these ideas have been debated and refined by party members, we will formally amend the constitution at the next delegates' conference," he said.
Loke also took the opportunity to highlight the importance of keeping DAP progressive and relevant, particularly to the youth, while also working towards increasing women’s participation in politics.
Regarding his policy speech at tomorrow’s congress, Loke revealed that he would propose reforms, including the incorporation of the candidate selection committee into the party constitution.
