Sultan of Selangor says royal counsel is not interference in state administration
The Sultan says every piece of advice is to be seen as part of his responsibility to ensure the state administration remains mindful of the people’s interests and Selangor’s future - October 25, 2026

HIS Royal Highness Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has expressed disappointment that his advice has been misconstrued as an attempt to interfere in state administration or practise absolute monarchy.

The Sultan said his remarks were not intended to interfere with the state government’s affairs, but to ensure that the welfare and well-being of the people remained a priority.

“I do not want the people to view my advice as a dispute or conflict between me and the government. Instead, I want every piece of advice to be seen as part of my responsibility to ensure the state administration remains mindful of the people’s interests and Selangor’s future,” he said.

He was speaking at the proclamation of titles, oath-taking and homage ceremony for the state’s palace dignitaries and Dato’ Diraja Selangor, alongside the conferment of Selangor state honours.

His Royal Highness said he was well aware of the laws governing his position and the extent of his role and responsibilities under the system of constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy practised by Malaysia and Selangor.

He also reaffirmed his respect for the Selangor Constitution of 1959 and the relevant provisions of the Federal Constitution governing his position and authority as Sultan.

“Throughout this time, I have discharged my duties based on the trust and responsibilities vested in me. I believe everyone entrusted with responsibilities in government has their respective duties, which must be respected and carried out with integrity,” he said.

The Sultan added that he would continue to uphold Islam as the religion of the state and ensure that it was respected and practised by Muslims in Selangor.

The Sultan also called on the people to preserve peace, mutual respect and understanding in the state’s multiracial and multireligious society.

Differences in race, religion and culture should not become grounds for hostility, he said.

“I urge the people to be careful when addressing sensitive issues. We must not exercise freedom of speech in ways that offend other races or their religions and beliefs,” he said.

“Freedom must be accompanied by responsibility, differences of opinion must be expressed with courtesy, and progress must be accompanied by humanitarian values. I want Selangor to remain a peaceful and prosperous state where the people live in unity,” he added. - October 25, 2026
