MINISTER for Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, has has called for more severe punishment for a stepfather who exploited his stepdaughter.
Nancy’s comments follow the case of a 56-year-old man who was fined RM6,000 after pleading guilty to filming and possessing explicit materials, including videos and images of his stepdaughter while she was bathing.
Nancy expressed concern that the sentence was too lenient, considering the gravity of the crime.
"In my opinion, a harsher sentence should be imposed for such a vile act, especially by a stepfather who is meant to protect his family members, not exploit them in this manner," she said in a statement today.
She urged the authorities to appeal the decision and reconsider the punishment. "We cannot tolerate any form of exploitation or sexual abuse against children," Nancy emphasised.
The offence falls under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which stipulates a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both. "I believe I am not alone in feeling that the penalty is too lenient given the severity of the offence committed," she added.
Nancy further stated that stricter penalties are crucial not only to deliver justice for the victim but also to send a strong message to society that such behaviour is utterly unacceptable.
"We must make it clear that such acts will not be tolerated under any circumstances," she said.
Her call for tougher sentencing underscores the ongoing efforts to combat sexual exploitation and ensure the safety and wellbeing of children in Malaysia. – March, 21, 2025
