THE Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has put forward a proposal for the creation of dual-function retention ponds, aiming to optimise rainwater collection and tackle water shortages more effectively.

Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, announced that the ministry plans to launch four pilot projects in Kuala Lumpur, pending approval from the Cabinet.

“We first need to secure the Cabinet’s final decision through a formal memorandum,” Fadillah explained to the media at his Aidilfitri Open House today.

Fadillah also revealed that PETRA had submitted several additional proposals, including innovative strategies for the domestic use of rainwater.

This initiative follows a directive from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a meeting with PETRA’s senior leadership on 10 March.

Anwar had instructed the ministry to put forward proposals within two weeks that would explore ways to harness rainwater, with the goal of alleviating water scarcity during periods of drought. - April 2, 2025
