THE final safety assessment of the gas explosion and fire site in Putra Heights is expected to be completed by tomorrow, according to Malaysia's Director-General of Fire and Rescue, Datuk Nor Hisham Mohamed.
Once completed, the report will be presented to the Selangor State Disaster Management Committee in the coming days.
Speaking to Bernama today, Nor Hisham explained that the final evaluation would focus exclusively on the fire crater area and would not include the affected infrastructure.
“This final assessment only covers the area of the fire crater and does not include the affected infrastructure. Currently, we are also conducting water extraction operations in the fire crater area due to runoff following the rain yesterday,” he said.
Earlier this week, on Tuesday, a gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, caused widespread destruction and disruption.
The blast, which occurred at around 8:10 am, sent flames soaring more than 30 metres high and reached temperatures of up to 1,000 degrees Celsius. It took nearly eight hours for fire services to fully extinguish the blaze.
Selangor’s Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan revealed yesterday that the initial technical investigation into the cause of the fire and explosion would be completed within two weeks.
“The impact of the massive explosion has altered the original structure and landscape of the area, making it unstable,” Hussein noted.
The explosion left 87 homes severely damaged and uninhabitable, while another 148 homes were affected but are expected to be habitable after repairs. The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as recovery and safety assessments progress. – April 5, 2025
