THE federal government’s decision to launch a development project worth RM6.13 million in Ayer Kuning was made prior to the commencement of the by-election process, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed on Monday.
Speaking to reporters following a monthly assembly at the Ministry of Finance, Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, emphasised that such allocations must not be used as political leverage once the electoral process has begun.
“The decision was made before the nomination day. If it happens after that, we need to issue a warning. It is not allowed,” he said.
Underscoring the government’s commitment to upholding democratic principles, Anwar reiterated that the use of government machinery or public funds during the by-election period is strictly prohibited.
“To ensure a free and fair election,” he said, “the by-election must not involve the use of government machinery or allocations.”
Speaking to the press after the Ministry of Finance’s monthly assembly, Anwar addressed concerns raised about the timing of the announcement by Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.
On 10 April, Minister Nga revealed that his ministry had approved funding for 33 development and public infrastructure projects under the Sentuhan Kasih 3.0 programme, totalling RM6.13 million. The projects are set to benefit residents within the Tapah parliamentary constituency.
However, the announcement has drawn criticism from electoral watchdog group Bersih (the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections), which alleged that the rollout of such projects in areas facing elections could amount to an abuse of government resources.
Bersih contended that the move runs contrary to the principles of free and fair elections, and called for greater accountability to prevent what it described as "disguised vote-buying."
Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, reiterated that the government remains committed to ensuring a level playing field during elections, stating that public funds and government apparatus must not be used to sway voters.
The by-election for the Ayer Kuning state seat is scheduled for 26 April, with early voting set to take place on 22 April. – April 14, 2025
