THE Road Transport Department (JPJ) will issue new standard operating procedures (SOP) and guidelines involving commercial and public service vehicles exceeding 7.5 tonnes and above in May.
Its director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, said the measure was taken following an increase in accidents involving heavy vehicles, especially lorries. According to him, the RTD, along with related parties including the Ministry of Transport, are reviewing and detailing the SOPs and related guidelines.
"Among the matters being detailed are the SOPs and the action that will be taken against drivers who exceed the speed limit, endangering other road users.
"We can see that the cases involving these commercial vehicles are indeed increasing, and one of the factors is that the drivers of these vehicles are driving beyond the set speed limits.
"So one of the steps to reduce the accident rate is to lower the speed limit of these vehicles.
"This is what we are detailing, and we will announce it in the near future, possibly in May," he said.
He said this when met at the Terengganu RTD's appreciation and Hari Raya celebration last night.
Aedy Fadly added that a total of 8,862 accident cases were recorded during the Special Operation for Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2025 (HRA 2025) which started from March 24 to April 8.
He said the number showed a decrease compared to the 9,859 cases recorded in Ops HRA 2024.
Similarly, the number of deaths decreased from 119 people in Ops HRA 2024 to 85 people in Ops HRA 2025.
"This decline is partly due to the public's awareness of road safety resulting from advocacy programmes by the RTD and other enforcement agencies," he said. – April 14, 2025
