THE development of six East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) stations across Terengganu, which will be rolled out over a period of one to three years, requires RM228 million to focus on stations located in Kuala Terengganu, Jerteh, Dungun, Chukai, Kemasik, and Bandar Permaisuri.
The plan forms part of a broader strategy to integrate public transport hubs with surrounding urban development, enhancing accessibility and spurring local economic activity.
Announcing the details during a question-and-answer session at the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly held at Wisma Darul Iman, State Infrastructure, Utilities and Rural Development chairman, Hanafiah Mat, said the funding will cover a range of components.
“The allocation includes, among others, the provision of infrastructure, land acquisition and the development of transit terminals to support the ECRL project,” he said.
Hanafiah also noted that planning for the TOD initiatives is already well under way.
“Each ECRL station area already has a master plan and land use planning that will be developed in phases, according to the set schedule,” he added, responding to a query from Sulaiman Sulong (PAS–Pengkalan Berangan) on the current status of the development.
According to Hanafiah, the TOD projects will be financed through a combination of federal and state government funding, alongside private investment from both domestic and international property developers.
In a separate development, Hanafiah also addressed concerns regarding infrastructure damage caused by recent landslides in the Hulu Terengganu area.
A total of RM36 million has been requested by the Public Works Department (JKR) from the Ministry of Economy to fund the construction of a new bridge and carry out slope repair works along Jalan Aring 8–Kenyir–Kuala Jeneris, near Jalan Tasik Kenyir.
The road remains closed following significant landslide damage incurred during heavy rainfall at the end of 2024.
“The Slope Engineering Branch (CKC) of JKR conducted a follow-up visit to the incident location on 4 December 2024. Based on the visit, CKC proposed the construction of a new section to replace the collapsed road,” Hanafiah explained, in response to a question from Dr Mamad Puteh (PAS–Kuala Berang).
The scope of the proposed works includes building a 150-metre-long new road section, establishing a proper drainage system, relocating utilities, and constructing temporary access roads and footpaths to ensure continued connectivity while the main works are underway. – April 15, 2025
