FEDERAL and State Governments have reaffirmed a ban on single-use plastic bags in Forest Reserves, National and State Parks, Marine Parks, as well as Geopark Heritage Sites across the country.
The ban will also extend to fixed premises such as supermarkets, convenience stores, petrol station convenience shops, fast food restaurants, chain stores, pharmacies, and other relevant premises.
All states reaffirmed their commitment to environmental protection during the 2025 edition of the Meeting of Environment Ministers and State Executive Councillors Responsible for the Environment (MEXCOE), chaired by Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
The meeting brought together seven state executive councillors overseeing environmental portfolios, along with senior officials from related federal and state departments and agencies.
"The method of implementation will be refined and adapted according to each state's capacity," the Ministry said. "This measure aims to educate the public on the importance of eco-friendly practices for the well-being of future generations."
Additionally, the meeting outlined stronger cooperation between the Federal and State Governments to combat the illegal processing of electronic waste (e-waste), an issue exacerbated by illegal imports of such waste from abroad.
"Tough action will be taken against illegal premises involved in e-waste processing in each state," the Ministry stated. "This step is intended to ensure firm enforcement and to send a clear message that illegal activities will not be tolerated."
Malaysia, the statement added, remains fully committed to protecting the environment and public health from the hazards associated with unlawfully processed e-waste.
The Ministry also introduced its ‘Green Practices Guide for Sustainable Open House Celebrations’, an initiative aimed at raising awareness of environmentally responsible practices during festive seasons.
The guide encourages the reduction of plastic use, the avoidance of waste, and the promotion of sustainable waste management.
"Such steps not only help preserve the environment but also reflect our responsibility as a community that cares for the planet’s sustainability," it noted.
MEXCOE 2025, the Ministry said, underscores the collective commitment of all stakeholders to preserve and restore the environment.
The Ministry expressed optimism that the decisions made at the meeting will positively impact the national ecosystem and position Malaysia as a leading example in addressing global environmental challenges.
"The Ministry is fully committed to ensuring environmental sustainability through the implementation of high-impact policies and initiatives," it added.
