THE Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) is calling for greater participation from large corporations, including multinationals and government-linked companies (GLCs), in adopting renewable energy practices such as solar power.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the push aligns with the government's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which targets 70 per cent of the country's electricity generation to come from renewable sources by 2050.
“We want to encourage more corporate entities, be they multinationals, GLCs, or others, to be part of sustainability initiatives like this. We can see the extent to which these companies can play a role in adopting solar energy,”Bernama reported Nik Nazmi saying.
“I often say that we tend to focus on individual actions — ourselves, our families, our children — and that’s important. But there are two major players in the sustainability agenda; individuals and large companies,” he added.
Nik Nazmi was speaking to reporters after inspecting the installation of 2,668 solar panels at IKEA Damansara today, an initiative reflecting the private sector’s growing contribution to clean energy.
Also present was IKEA Malaysia’s Country Retail Director, Malcolm Pruys.
The solar panels, covering almost 12,000 square metres of rooftop space, are expected to generate two megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy annually, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 1,330 tonnes each year.
With this latest addition, IKEA Malaysia now operates 20,437 solar panels across all its stores and facilities nationwide, contributing to a total renewable energy generation capacity of 6.3 MWh annually.
