SEVERAL major highways across the Klang Valley experienced significant disruption this morning following flash floods triggered by continuous heavy rainfall.
PLUS Malaysia Berhad reported flooding at Kilometre 9.1 northbound, affecting the stretch from Shah Alam to Subang. The left and middle lanes were obstructed, causing a severe traffic jam extending back to the Setia Alam Interchange.
Similar conditions were observed near the Shah Alam Toll Plaza on the ELITE Highway, where both the motorcycle and left-hand lanes were rendered impassable due to floodwaters.
Meanwhile, on the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE), the Shah Alam to Subang route was also affected. Flooding blocked the left lane near the Shah Alam interchange, compounding the congestion.
The disruption follows widespread flash flooding across Selangor, sparked by heavy downpours early in the morning.
One of the contributing factors appears to be an overflowing retention pond in Taman Seri Alam, which is currently undergoing repairs after partially collapsing in late December.
Water reportedly overflowed through a section still under repair, following the previous breach on December 29, last year.
The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Selangor confirmed that around 86 homes were inundated in Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh and Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir.
In a separate incident in Saujana Utama, Batang Berjuntai, 35 homes were affected after a breach was reported at the Air Hillpark retention pond at around 5:30am. Emergency crews from the Bestari Jaya Fire Station were dispatched, arriving at the scene 25 kilometres away by 7:52am.
Operations Commander Mohd Amirul Shafiq Mohamad Mahrin said the floodwater reached depths of approximately one foot.
“About 35 homes were affected, but no evacuations have been necessary at this time,” he said.
He added that water levels are gradually receding, with operations continuing on-site. A team of five firefighters and one FRT engine is currently deployed.
Mohd Amirul also urged authorities to investigate the structural issues surrounding the retention pond, which had previously been flagged for problems.
“I urge the relevant authorities to look into the pond’s structure so that similar incidents do not recur,” he said.
A local resident of Taman Seri Alam, identified only as Sazalie, said the flood occurred when the retention pond failed to hold back the volume of early morning rain.
“The retention pond couldn’t cope with the heavy rainfall and overflowed into the residential area,” he said. - April 23, 2025
