MALAYSIA and Turkiye are set to deepen their cooperation in the energy sector, with plans to formalise a memorandum of understanding (MoU) focused on renewable and nuclear energy, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
Fadillah, who also serves as Minister for Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said both countries are working to elevate an existing letter of intent into an MoU to enable more structured collaboration between senior officials and policymakers.
“We are working to upgrade this letter of intent into an MoU,” he told Bernama late Tuesday, following a meeting in Ankara with Turkiye's Energy and Natural Resources Minister, Alparslan Bayraktar.
Also in attendance were Malaysia’s Ambassador to Turkiye, Sazali Mustafa Kamal, the Deputy Secretary-General (Energy) of the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA), Mareena Mahpudz, and Mohd Zarihi Mohd Hashim, Chief of New Energy at Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).
The letter of intent was originally exchanged during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's official visit to Malaysia on 10–11 February.
Fadillah said discussions in Ankara also touched on energy regulations and trading models in Europe, which could serve as useful references for Malaysia and Turkiye as they seek to enhance energy cooperation.
“The third point involves regulations and energy trading practices currently being implemented in Europe, and how they manage power trading or power generation,” he said.
“The fourth is from a regulatory perspective, regarding the management of energy export and import, including expertise in grid systems, distribution, and so on,” he added.
Fadillah is currently on a two-day official visit to Turkiye and will next lead the Malaysian delegation to the *Future of Energy Security Summit* in London on 24–25 April. The summit is jointly organised by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Government of the United Kingdom.
According to PETRA, Fadillah’s participation at the summit highlights Malaysia’s ongoing commitment and achievements in tackling energy-related challenges, particularly those concerning energy security and the national energy transition. - April 23, 2025
