A 63-YEAR-old man is under investigation by Malaysian authorities after allegedly posting deeply offensive comments about Prophet Muhammad and Islam on Facebook, prompting a joint probe by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysia Police.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded a statement from the individual, believed to have uploaded the offensive remarks via his personal Facebook account.

The interview was conducted with the assistance of officers from the Iskandar Puteri District Police Headquarters in Johor on 20 April 2025.

A mobile phone and SIM card allegedly used to upload the comments have been confiscated for forensic analysis.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which criminalises the use of network facilities or services to transmit content deemed offensive or indecent.

If convicted, the suspect could face a fine of up to RM500,000, a prison sentence of up to two years, or both.

The investigation paper will be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor at the Attorney General's Chambers for further direction.

“MCMC will not compromise or tolerate any party misusing social media platforms, particularly when touching on 3R issues—religion, race, and royalty—that could incite religious tensions and disrupt the harmony of Malaysia’s multiracial society,” the commission said in a statement.

The public is urged to engage on social media in a responsible and ethical manner. Any related complaints can be lodged through MCMC’s official channel at https://aduan.mcmc.gov.my. - April 24, 2025
