MALAYSIA remains open to constructive engagement with the United States in resolving issues surrounding the retaliatory tariffs imposed under the Trump administration, according to a ststement issued by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) today.
Leading a Malaysian delegation to Washington DC on April 24, 2025, MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz held meetings with US Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, and US Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer, to discuss the issue of tariffs levied on Malaysian goods.
"Malaysia is prepared to continue working with the United States to reach a mutually agreeable resolution on the retaliatory tariffs," the ministry said.
The discussions focused on four key areas: reducing the US trade deficit, addressing non-tariff barriers, enhancing technological security and protection, and exploring the potential for a bilateral trade agreement.
Malaysia welcomed the recent 90-day temporary suspension on the implementation of tariff measures, viewing it as an opportunity to re-engage in a constructive manner.
"Malaysia has openly stated that it will not pursue retaliatory tariffs against the US, but stands ready to cooperate in achieving mutually acceptable outcomes on the issues raised by the Trump administration," the statement added.
MITI reaffirmed that the United States remains one of Malaysia’s most important and strategic economic partners. American companies have played a significant role in Malaysia's economy for decades, and the bilateral relationship continues to benefit businesses and workers on both sides.
MITI also shared data showing a more balanced trade performance over the past decade, with the US trade deficit showing a downward trend — a positive shift in the bilateral trade dynamic.
"Malaysia will explore alternative means to address the US's concerns while ensuring that the mutually beneficial trade flow between both nations continues," the ministry stated.
Tengku Zafrul added, "I believe our meetings with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer are a step in the right direction.
“We will maintain momentum by following up on key issues discussed within the 90-day pause on the implementation of retaliatory tariffs. Malaysia also emphasises that all lines of communication remain open and we will continue working to find a positive resolution to this matter."
The discussions also touched on how the US can strengthen its engagement with ASEAN, particularly in light of Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair this year — a timely opportunity to advance shared goals and regional stability. - April 25, 2025
