AMID the challenges of raising three children with autism, single mother Suzana Ilias remained resolute in ensuring her children exercised their democratic right to vote during the Ayer Kuning state by-election on Saturday.
Suzana, 53, brought her children—Muhammad Khir Khairul Nizam, 29, Nur Fatimah, 28, and Nur Ashikin, 25—to the polling centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bidor, marking their second time voting after their debut in Malaysia’s 15th General Election in 2022.
“This time (going to vote) was more challenging as I had to single-handedly manage the three of them. Previously, my late husband helped, but after he passed away last year, I now have to manage everything alone,” she said.
She explained that although two of her children are able to care for themselves, her daughter Nur Fatimah still requires close supervision, particularly in public settings.
“She is somewhat afraid of crowded places, which is why I always hug her,” Bernama cited Suzana sharing.
Despite the difficulties, Suzana emphasized the importance of civic participation for all Malaysians, including those in the Persons with Disabilities (PWD) category.
“Although my children are special, they still have the right to choose their leaders,” she said.
“If people talk to them, they can understand. I taught them a little about the voting process, so the rest is up to them to make their own choices.”
