THE Ministry of Communications, in collaboration with MCMC and Pos Malaysia, has unveiled a series of upgrades to postal services on Mount Kinabalu, aimed at improving visitor experience and strengthening Malaysia’s image as a forward-looking tourism destination.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Communications through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Pos Malaysia, is set to benefit both local and international climbers while preserving the symbolic value of Mount Kinabalu's iconic summit postbox.
“The availability of postal services atop Mount Kinabalu is more than just a convenience – it’s a symbolic one-way communication link from the highest peak in Southeast Asia, offering climbers a meaningful way to commemorate their journey,” said Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching, who recently completed a three-day working visit to the summit postbox, beginning April 28.
In a statement released by MCMC today, she said, the visit showcased several enhancements, including the introduction of specially designed limited-edition postcards and a new cancellation stamp unique to Mount Kinabalu.
These additions are expected to boost the appeal of sending physical mementoes from the summit.
During the visit, Teo also received a briefing from telecommunications service providers involved in extending and upgrading mobile coverage on the mountain – a crucial step in enhancing safety and connectivity for climbers.
As part of quality assurance efforts, the MCMC conducted service testing using its Nexus application.
This in-house tool allows for real-time monitoring and analysis of user experience across high-altitude locations, ensuring that touchpoints like Mount Kinabalu meet expected service standards.
“The MADANI Government, through the Ministry of Communications and MCMC, remains committed to strengthening digital and communication infrastructure in key tourism zones such as Mount Kinabalu for the comfort and safety of visitors,” the Ministry stated.
This collaborative effort, involving government agencies, telecom companies, and tourism stakeholders, reflects a broader commitment to improving essential services in remote and iconic destinations.
“Innovations in communications and postal services not only enhance convenience for the public and tourists alike, but also help raise Malaysia’s profile as we prepare for Visit Malaysia Year 2026,” the statement added.
The statement cited that among those present at the closing of the working visit were Ranau MP Datuk Jonathan Yasin; Bukhari Yahya, MCMC’s Chief State Affairs Officer; Fiona Liao, Chief Marketing, Communications and Sustainability Officer of Pos Malaysia; Justinus Guntabid from Sabah Parks; as well as representatives from Sabah’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and telecommunications providers CelcomDigi, U Mobile, Telekom Malaysia (TM) and Maxis. - April 30, 2025
