TWO policemen attached to a district police headquarters in Terengganu have been placed under a week-long remand starting today, as authorities investigate claims of corruption involving alleged bribes in exchange for protecting illegal activities.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Mohd Zul Zakiqudin Zulkifli following an application from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

According to sources familiar with the investigation, the first suspect, a man in his 50s, is believed to have received RM3,000 around August last year from an individual in return for not taking enforcement action against gambling and drug offences.

The second suspect, in his 40s, is alleged to have accepted a RM2,000 bribe between December 2022 and May 2023 to avoid taking action in a separate narcotics case.

“Both suspects are suspected of receiving bribes in cash and via bank transfers into their respective accounts,” a source said.

The two men were arrested between 12.30pm and 2pm yesterday after presenting themselves at the Terengganu MACC office to provide statements.

When contacted, Terengganu MACC director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid confirmed the arrests and said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. - May 5, 2025
