THE Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) revealed that 30 per cent of doctors in the country fall into the B40 category.
President-elect Dr R Thirunavukarasu said the findings were obtained through a study conducted in 2018 involving nearly 1,800 doctors.
According to him, only 10 percent of doctors are truly economically successful, reported Sinar Harian.
“They all see doctors as rich, but studies show that almost 30 percent belong to the B40, while the other 30 percent have enough to eat,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters at a recent gathering with 200 doctors to protest the use of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 (Act 723) on the private health sector.
The group, which consists of 11 medical associations, urged the government to review the use of Act 723 in clinical settings.
Instead, according to them, the regulation of transparency and display of drug prices in private clinics should be subject to the Private Health Care Facilities and Services Act 1998 (Act 586).Starting May 1, all private clinics and pharmacies are required to display the prices of medicines with the aim of increasing transparency and helping consumers make choices based on price.
The measure was implemented in accordance with Act 723 with the objective of increasing transparency in transactions and enabling consumers to compare prices. – May 7, 2025
