DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, will embark on an official working visit to France under aims to strengthen bilateral collaboration between both nations in the area of energy transition, and to present Malaysia’s strategic direction in the water sector.
The visit will take place from 10 to 14 May 2025, in conjunction with his participation in the Global Water Summit (GWS) 2025 hosted by Global Water Intelligence (GWI).
The Global Water Summit serves as a platform to promote sustainable development and economic competitiveness through water sector transformation, in line with the Water Transformation Roadmap 2040 (AIR 2040), which envisions the sector becoming an economic hub by 2040, PETRA said in a statement released today.
On 13 May 2025, the Deputy Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the opening plenary of the summit, themed ‘Delivering the Economics of Water’.
His speech, titled “Transforming Mindsets, Transforming Approaches: Malaysia’s Vision for Sustainable Water Management”, will highlight Malaysia’s progress in water governance, particularly its efforts in water reuse for industrial purposes and the expansion of sanitation services to low-income communities.
As part of the visit, Fadillah will also conduct a benchmarking visit to a nuclear power plant on 12 May 2025, in collaboration with Electricité de France (EDF).
This initiative aligns with the Government's broader strategy to assess nuclear energy as a potential component in Malaysia’s energy mix, aimed at strengthening national energy security.
Further engagements on 13 May will include knowledge-sharing sessions and policy discussions with six key French ministries and agencies responsible for nuclear governance and technology.
These include the French Ministry of Economy and Finance, EDF, the National Agency for Radioactive Waste Management (ANDRA), the French Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ASNR), the International Institute of Nuclear Energy (I2EN), and the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA).
Fadillah is also expected to pay a courtesy call on H.E. Marc Ferracci, France’s Minister for Energy and Industry, to explore prospects for energy transition cooperation and to strengthen bilateral relations. Areas of potential collaboration include energy security, policy development, regulatory frameworks, and knowledge exchange on challenges and solutions.
This official visit to France is part of Malaysia’s broader efforts to position itself as a premier global investment destination and to foster strong international partnerships in the energy sector.
The initiative also reflects the aspirations of the Malaysia MADANI agenda, which emphasises sustainability and good governance through strategic global collaboration to enhance national competitiveness on the world stage. - May 10, 2025
