KOTA KINABALU – The installation of CCTVs are among the steps taken by the Sabah government to increase public safety and security in Sandakan.
Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, who is local government and housing minister as well as finance minister II, said 20 CCTV units are now operational in several hotspots around Sandakan.
These included the city centre, Bandar Kim Fung, Bandar Prima, Bandar Tyng dan Bandar Sibuga Jaya.
Other than installing CCTVs, he said adequate lighting in these hotspots in Sandakan can also assist in increasing the safety aspect.
Masidi said he believed that the security forces, including the police, have also taken steps to maintain security in Sandakan.
For that purpose, an application for allocations will be submitted to the federal government under its Safe City and Lighting Programmes.
He was replying to Sungai Manila assemblyman Mokran Ingkat, who asked the minister about the government’s plan to increase security, especially in installing more CCTVs in Sandakan.
“My ministry is always committed to ensuring that CCTV infrastructure, lighting and installation are improved in towns and cities throughout the state, including Sandakan, so that it can reduce criminal cases and ensure the area is safe,” Masidi said.
Earlier this year in July, the Borneo Post had reported that Sandakan folk were concerned about increasing crime in the district.
According to Sandakan Liberal Democratic Party Complaints Bureau Committee member Etwin Kwan, it had received complaints from residents calling to voice their concerns over reports of burglaries and asking for more police patrols around residential areas and crime hotspots. – The Vibes, December 22, 2020
