POLICE are currently reviewing an application by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) to hold a public rally in front of the Sogo shopping complex on Saturday, 24 May.

Dang Wangi District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman, confirmed that the application was submitted under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and is now being assessed from multiple angles.

“We are aware of the notification regarding the assembly and are in the process of discussions with the organisers,” he said in a brief statement.

Police are also considering whether an alternative venue should be proposed, especially in light of the 46th ASEAN Summit taking place in the capital over the same weekend.

Media reports earlier stated that the rally, titled ‘Himpunan Melayu Berdaulat’, is expected to draw over 15,000 participants. It is being organised by the Secretariat of the Malay Sovereignty NGO Coalition.

The coalition’s chairman, Syed Hassan Syed Ali, was quoted as saying the rally — scheduled to begin at 2.30pm — aims to voice concerns over what he claimed is the diminishing status of the Malay-Muslim community under the current Madani government. - May 22, 2025
