A PHARMACY known as Lau & Tan Pharmacy Sdn. Bhd in Kuala Terengganu has been fined RM50,000 by the Kuala Terengganu Sessions Court for misleading consumers on the pricing of a goat’s milk product, in breach of Section 12(1)(a) of the Consumer Protection Act 1999.

Judge Nazlyza Mohamad Nazri handed down the sentence after the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt at the close of the defence stage.

The case centred around a pricing discrepancy on 25 May 2022 at one of the company’s outlets in Pusat Komersial Cabang Tiga, Kuala Terengganu. The goat’s milk product was displayed with a price tag of RM89.90, but customers were charged RM91.90 at the counter.

The court ruled that the inaccurate pricing amounted to a serious infringement of consumer rights and had caused confusion among consumers.

In delivering her judgment, Judge Nazlyza also noted that this was not the company’s first offence and that the misrepresentation had occurred over a reasonable time frame without corrective action being taken.

The prosecution was led by enforcement officer Nur Amirah Mokhtar from the Terengganu office of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).

The case, which began in 2023, saw five prosecution witnesses and six defence witnesses called to testify. - May 28, 2025
