DEMANDS for Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz to resign as Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) are ill-advised and risk destabilising the country’s economic progress, said Rizwan Shah Azlan, Umno Youth Chief for the Pandan division.
Rizwan emphasised that Malaysia is navigating a crucial juncture in its economic trajectory and cannot afford to sideline technocrats with proven expertise.
"It is wholly inappropriate to call for Tengku Zafrul’s resignation at such a pivotal moment, especially given his consistent performance and track record," he said in a statement on Monday.
“At a time when the country needs its best Cabinet line-up, individuals with his calibre and competence should not be benched.”
The statement comes after Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation from all posts in Umno over the weekend, including his role as Umno Kota Raja Division Chief. He also declared his intention to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), effectively ending his association with Umno since 1997.
Despite this political shift, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim affirmed on Monday that Tengku Zafrul would remain in his ministerial post, citing his commendable work in securing hundreds of billions of ringgit in investments.
“Tengku Zafrul has performed his ministerial duties very well. Much of the nation’s investment inflow has been handled through his efforts,” said Anwar.
Rizwan further noted that the current global landscape is fraught with challenges such as geopolitical tensions, volatile commodity markets, inflationary pressures, and supply chain disruptions.
“Malaysia is accelerating its transition to a digital, green, and high-impact industrial economy. Naturally, all key national players must be fully engaged,” he said.
Describing Tengku Zafrul as someone who prioritises the nation’s interest, Rizwan highlighted his unique blend of experience in both the public and private sectors as a valuable asset.
“His contributions in boosting investor confidence, securing strategic trade openings, and attracting foreign investment are evident.
“I believe his decisions are guided by deep reflection and a sincere desire to serve the country.”
Rizwan added that Malaysians should support individuals striving to bring positive change, regardless of their political affiliations.
“If given the opportunity, he will grow into a politician Malaysians can be proud of—wherever he serves,” he said. - June 2, 2025
