KUALA LUMPUR – Following news of beef supply tainted by a “meat cartel”, Kuala Lumpur Bumiputera Traders and Hawkers Association is telling its 6,000 members to temporarily stop selling beef-based products, reported the New Straits Times today.
The group was quoted as saying they will instead focus on selling fish- and chicken-based products, as concerns surround the halal status of frozen beef.
“This is our advice to the hawkers. We have asked them to stop promoting beef-based dishes, especially those involving imported frozen beef.
“We have other options available, such as chicken and fish, which we can eat without doubting their halal status. So they should sell that more,” its president, Datuk Seri Rosli Sulaiman, was quoted as saying.
He said the group’s members have been questioned by the public on the halal status of certain beef products.
He also called for the Malaysian Islamic Development Department to provide clarification.
It has been reported that the “meat cartel” has been mixing questionable frozen beef with kangaroo and horse meat, on top of non-certified halal supply.
Senior officers from four government agencies were bribed with money and sex to abet the syndicate.
