A MALAYSIAN haj pilgrim has died in the Holy Land after suffering a heart attack shortly after completing the wukuf ritual in Arafah, raising the death toll among Malaysian pilgrims for the 1446H/2025 season to nine.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, confirmed that Syed Baharom Syed Hussin, 72, from Alor Setar, Kedah, passed away at Mina Al Wadee Hospital at 4.53am local time on Saturday.

“Syed Baharom had earlier received medical attention at the Mina tent before being transferred to the hospital,” said the minister in a statement.

“Tabung Haji has contacted the family of the deceased and will handle all funeral arrangements and matters of welfare.”

Mohd Na’im, on behalf of the entire Tabung Haji management, extended his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that Syed Baharom’s soul be granted mercy and that his haj be accepted by Allah.

According to reports, this marks the eighth death attributed to cardiac-related causes among Malaysian pilgrims this season. One additional death was due to infection and organ failure earlier this month.

Mohd Na’im added that Tabung Haji would continue to closely monitor the health conditions of all Malaysian pilgrims in the Holy Land, especially during the physically demanding phases of the pilgrimage.

“I urge all pilgrims to safeguard their health, heed the instructions of staff, and refrain from overexertion—particularly when performing the stoning ritual at the Jamrah—given the extremely hot weather,” he said. - June 8, 2025
