THE Kelantan Police have asserted that only the construction of a physical barrier—a wall or fence—along the Kelantan-Thailand border can bring an end to smuggling activities in the state.
According to Kelantan Police Chief, Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat, the border remains too open and porous, stretching for approximately 45 kilometres.
“We only have eight control posts along that stretch, so naturally, there are gaps that continue to allow smuggling activities to occur,” he said.
“Therefore, in my view, only the construction of a border wall can comprehensively resolve the smuggling issue,” he told reporters during a press conference at a drug disposal event.
Mohd Yusoff also revealed that the proposal to build such a wall had already been raised with higher authorities.
At the same time, he noted a shift in drug trafficking trends in the state, with smugglers now operating on a smaller scale.
“This trend changed after cross-border movement through illegal bases along the Sungai Golok was banned,” he said.
“Previously, we used to make large-scale drug seizures, but now they are afraid. If smuggling does occur, it is in much smaller quantities.”
He added that yaba pills remain the most in-demand drug in Kelantan.
“Until now, for Kelantan, yaba pills continue to be the most widely sought after compared to other drugs,” he said. - June 11, 2025
