A TOTAL of 6,369 road accidents were recorded nationwide during Op Lancar held in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha this year, according to Bukit Aman’s Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT).
The figures, recorded between 6 and 9 June 2024, mark a three per cent increase – or 181 more cases – compared to the same period last year.
JSPT director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said that while the number of accidents rose, the number of fatal crashes and overall deaths saw a notable decline.
“There were 58 fatal accident cases recorded this year, a decrease of 26 compared to 84 last year,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
“The number of fatalities also fell, with 78 deaths this year compared to 88 in 2023 – a reduction of 10 lives lost.”
Mohd Yusri added that 6,120 of this year’s recorded accidents involved vehicle damage, compared to 5,854 such cases in 2023 – an increase of 266 incidents.
He reiterated JSPT’s commitment to road safety and traffic law enforcement, noting that safe vehicle conditions and responsible road use remain crucial.
“JSPT is committed to upholding the law to ensure road safety and compliance with traffic regulations. However, road users must also take personal responsibility for ensuring their vehicles are roadworthy at all times and under all conditions,” he said.
“Disciplined, responsible drivers play a critical role in reducing risks and achieving national targets to lower road deaths and injuries.” - June 12, 2025
