FLIGHT operations at Kuching International Airport (KIA) were temporarily suspended today following a runway incident involving a Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) CN-235 aircraft, which made a precautionary landing late this morning.
According to Bernama, the aircraft experienced a malfunction in its nose landing gear indicator during approach, prompting a safety protocol that led to a full runway closure from 11.30 am to allow for aircraft removal and subsequent safety inspections. No injuries were reported.
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued, with the closure expected to last until 3 pm. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), in a statement, advised passengers to consult their respective airlines for updated flight schedules.
The Ministry of Transport Sarawak is closely monitoring the situation. “We are working with all relevant authorities to ensure the runway is cleared as soon as possible so that affected flights may resume safely,” said Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.
Airline operators, including Batik Air and Malaysia Airlines, reported delays but no cancellations. A Batik Air spokesperson confirmed, “Our flights were delayed but are expected to resume by 3 pm once the runway is cleared.” Malaysia Airlines noted that flight MH3530 experienced a delay of around 45 minutes.
The runway was closed as a precaution while military personnel carried out the necessary removal and checks. MAHB stated updates would be issued once the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) declares the runway safe for operations.
