MALAYSIA and Uzbekistan have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral economic and trade cooperation during a high-level meeting in Tashkent this week.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof paid a courtesy visit to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Monday, 23 June, for discussions that lasted over an hour. The talks followed President Mirziyoyev’s visit to Malaysia in February 2025, and aimed to advance relations across multiple sectors.
The two leaders "exchanged views on how to expand bilateral trade volumes and increase the number of flights between the two countries to boost tourism between Malaysia and Uzbekistan".
Economic cooperation was a key focus of the meeting, with both sides highlighting opportunities for collaboration in green energy, oil and gas, and the chemical industries, as well as in electronics and semiconductor manufacturing.
Trade between the two nations reached RM369.8 million in 2024, positioning Uzbekistan as Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner in Central Asia. The trade balance was in Malaysia’s favour, totalling RM360.3 million. - June 24, 2025
