THE Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) has unanimously agreed to offer the party’s presidency back to its co-founder, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, following his acquittal by the Court of Appeal on all criminal charges.
The decision was reached during a Central Executive Committee (JKEP) meeting, with the party citing both legal vindication and his consistent defence of MUDA’s ideals as reasons for the move.
“This offer is made based on two principles: that Syed Saddiq has cleared his name and integrity through a transparent and fair court process. Secondly, he has consistently defended MUDA’s dignity and reputation throughout his time as a Member of Parliament,” the party said in a statement today.
MUDA’s acting president, Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz, praised Syed Saddiq’s earlier decision to vacate the presidency in November 2023 as “a bold and unprecedented move” by a political leader facing prosecution—demonstrating MUDA’s commitment to integrity.
“The vacating of the presidency was a courageous step, reflecting the party’s deep political will to uphold integrity,” she said, noting that Syed Saddiq has remained active in his parliamentary duties and constituency service despite the ongoing case.
While the party hopes to see the Muar MP return to lead ahead of future elections, it added that it respects his need for time to consider the offer.
On Wednesday, the Court of Appeal acquitted Syed Saddiq of all four charges, which dated back seven years and involved RM1 million in alleged criminal breach of trust, RM120,000 in misappropriated assets, and two counts of money laundering amounting to RM50,000 each.
Amira called on the public to continue supporting MUDA’s mission to build a better Malaysia, saying, “Syed Saddiq never wavered in his service, and this marks a new chapter for both him and the party.” - June 26, 2025
