A MAN was reportedly snatched by a crocodile while fishing by the riverbank near Jalan Matang late last night.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre (PGO), the incident occurred at approximately 10pm when the victim, Jacob Tuan, 32, was fishing alone when a crocodile suddenly emerged and dragged him into the river.
“The incident happened swiftly, leaving no time for assistance,” said a department spokesperson.
A witness to the attack, who is also a family member of the victim, immediately contacted the police to report the incident.
Following the alert, 12 personnel from the Petra Jaya and Batu Lintang fire and rescue stations were dispatched to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the operations commander reported that the incident took place along the riverbank, roughly 200 metres from the main road,” the spokesperson added.
The search and rescue (SAR) operation proved challenging due to the dense vegetation and darkness along the route to the site.
After discussions with the police and other supporting agencies, the SAR operation was called off at 12.30am and resumed this morning.
