THE Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta is working with Indonesian authorities to verify reports that a Malaysian national may be among those affected by the sinking of a passenger ferry in the Bali Strait late Wednesday night.
Wisma Putra, which falls under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Sunday that the embassy had been in contact with Indonesian officials from the outset and was initially informed that no Malaysians were involved.
“In light of recent reports indicating that a Malaysian citizen may be among the victims, the embassy is working swiftly with the Ministry’s Consular Department and Indonesian authorities to verify the information,” the statement read.
Search and rescue efforts remain ongoing, and the embassy said it continues to maintain close and consistent communication with the relevant Indonesian agencies.

According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Transport, the KMP Tunu ferry was carrying 12 crew members, 53 passengers, and 22 vehicles when it issued a distress signal at 11.20pm local time. The vessel sank 15 minutes later, en route from East Java’s Ketapang Port to Gilimanuk Port in Bali.
As of 5 July, Indonesian authorities confirmed that six people had died, 29 remained missing, and 30 had been rescued.
“The Ministry and the embassy will continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with the Indonesian authorities,” Wisma Putra added. Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available. - July 6, 2025
